If you think your iPhone is already prepared for the best time of the year, you might be wrong. Before setting out on a longer journey there are a few things to pay attention on. If you want to rely on your iPhone for 100 percent on your vacation, you should take precautions to prepare your iPhone perfectly. If you follow the steps below, you will be spared from bad surprises.

Make iPhone backup

Basically it is wise to periodically make a backup of your iPhone data anyway, so that your photos, videos, settings and info are not lost in case of a technical defect. Speaking of vacation, it might be more plausible to lose the iPhone data because of pickpocketing. As the Apple phone also enjoys highest priority in pilferers, you should steel yourself and your data in advance by making a backup. Learn how to back up your iPhone with a few clicks in our article “How To Backup iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch (or Restore)”.

Activate “Find my iPhone“

The loss of the iPhone – be it theft or own fault – is not impossible on vacation. If you want to prepare your iPhone for such (hopefully never happening) situations optimally, the activation of the “Find my iPhone” option is indispensable. This feature helps you to locate your iPhone from another device. In addition it is possible to play sounds on the lost iPhone and delete all data. If you haven’t already activated the “Find my iPhone” app while setting up your iPhone, you can do it with the following steps:

Settings → iCloud → Find my iPhone

Create Medical ID on iPhone

If you had an accident or another emergency before, when you were abroad, you will know how dangerous this situation could be. Especially if the misfortune happens in a country, where you don’t speak or understand the language they speak. The language barrier can perhaps block the fast exchange of medical information with helpers. To prevent such situations and to support a fast acting of paramedics and doctors in emergencies, you can create a Medical ID in the Health app of your iPhone. You can record any information like illnesses, allergies, medication or blood type. So you are on the safe side. Please, don’t forget to allow access to your medical data, when the iPhone is locked. This way the professional helpers can access the medical information any time.

Health app → Medical ID

Free up storage space for photos & videos

Photos and videos belong to the vacation like the vanilla cream to the Oreo cookie. You don’t want to be stopped from taking memories of your journey by a full iPhone storage. So you should get rid of unnecessary and useless photos, videos and apps before you go on your vacation. Check the biggest and most unnecessary space guzzling apps under Settings General Storage & iCloud Usage Manage Storage and consider deleting them. Before you start removing photos and videos from your iPhone, synchronize them with iTunes in case you want to keep the content. Afterwards you can delete the photos and videos from the Photos app and enjoy the free storage space for your vacation pictures and videos.

Deactivate automatic updates

Automatic app updates are useful to keep your installed apps up-to-date without taking care of the updates by yourself. However, this can strain your mobile data volume and it may cost you roaming fees abroad. Hence, you should turn off this feature for your vacation. Go to your Settings for this and choose iTunes & App Store. Deactivate the feature “Updates” by tapping the slide button. Instead you can update your apps manually in the App Store to keep them up-to-date or turn off the option “Use Mobile Data”, so that you would only use Wi-Fi for automatic updates.

Forbid apps to use mobile data

The most iPhone apps are regularly accessing the internet, because most applications are useless without internet. The consistent access to internet has not just benefits. The mobile usage can strain the data volume and perhaps cause high roaming costs in another country. That’s why you have the option to forbid the mobile data usage for single apps. So they only use Wi-Fi networks. To set this up, go to Settings Mobile Data (Carrier) and have a look at the section “Use Mobile Data For”. This list contains all your apps and you can pick the apps that you want to forbid the mobile data usage. Just deactivate the certain apps by tapping the slide button next to it, so that it turns grey. It’s advisable to forbid the mobile usage especially for apps, that you rarely use. The Wi-Fi usage remains unaffected by this setting.

Turn off data roaming

If you can do it without mobile data on your vacation, because the free Wi-Fi hotspots are enough for you, then you can turn off the data roaming completely. Go to the Settings of your iPhone and choose Mobile Data (Carrier). Tap Mobile Data Options and turn off Data Roaming by tapping the slide button. Now the mobile data usage for abroad is turned off completely. This way you will get all emails and push notifications once you are connected to the Wi-Fi and you won’t pay for data roaming. By the way, you can still call and send SMS with a deactivated data roaming.

Share photo album via iCloud

If you want to share your vacation photos with friends and family right away, you can create a shared iCloud photo album. Your friends can not just look at the shared photo album, they can also comment and like. In addition you can activate an option that they can add photos to the album as well. A link helps to share the photo album with people, who are not using iPhones. For sharing the link, go to the Settings on your iPhone, choose iCloud and then Photos. There you can activate the iCloud Sharing feature. Then go to your Photos app and tap Select in the top right corner. Mark the photos, which you want to share. Once you marked all, click the share icon at the bottom left and choose iCloud Photo Sharing in the first row.

Use music streaming services

You obviously want to enjoy your favorite music, when you are on vacation. Before you spend hours in front of your PC deciding which albums or titles you want to add to your iPhone playlist, you could register for a music streaming service instead. Apple’s own streaming service Apple Music offers a 3 months test period for free. 30 million songs are available at any time. This way you can enjoy all kinds of albums and songs totally non-committal and you can use them offline after downloading them. If you don’t have enough storage space on your iPhone you can load them from the iCloud and stream them via mobile or Wi-Fi network. So use the free test period of the music streaming service for your vacation and save the time of searching for the right music.

Protect iPhone with Passcode

One of the most important and basic safety precautions to protect your iPhone and the saved data is to lock your iPhone by Passcode. If you haven’t set up a Passcode and you really lose your iPhone or it gets stolen, the finder or theft can easily access all information, including contacts, emails, SMS, photos and videos. Therefore, you should activate the Passcode to protect your own data and privacy. Actually this should always be setup – not only for vacation. The Passcode (or the Touch ID) will be requested every time you want to unlock your iPhone.

Settings → Touch ID & Passcode → Turn Passcode On
