iOS 10: Hide / Remove Default Apps on iPhone

Finally! Apple will allow users to hide default (preinstalled) apps on their iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with the final release of iOS 10 later this year. This will give you more control over what appears on your Home Screen and remove the need to hide undesired apps away in an unsightly folder. There are probably few users who actually require the e.g. Stocks app on their iPhone and as of now, there is no way to uninstall or hide it. Fortunately, Apple will change this with the release of iOS 10.

There is one caveat however: Removing a default app can have some repercussions when using the Apple Watch or CarPlay and other features that might depend on some functionality. This means that the available features will be restricted accordingly until you reinstall said app.

Here’s a list of all of the apps you will be able to hide / remove in iOS 10:

  • Calculator
  • Calendar
  • Compass
  • Contacts
  • FaceTime
  • Find My Friends
  • Home
  • iBooks
  • iCloud Drive
  • iTunes Store
  • Mail
  • Maps
  • Music
  • News
  • Notes
  • Podcasts
  • Reminders
  • Stocks
  • Tips
  • Videos
  • Voice Memos
  • Watch app
  • Weather

The built-in or so-called “stock apps” can be removed by pressing and holding their app icon on the Home Screen until your apps start to jiggle and then tapping the x-symbol on the respective app. Then tap Remove. When done, press the Home Button.
